How would you mark your 50th year in athletics? Most of us might be tempted to hang up our runners and give ourselves a well earned pat on the back. Not me at 65 years old, I have completed all 38 Dublin Marathons, but this year I’m attempting something truly staggering. Starting on New Year’s Day 2018, I’m going to run round the entire coast of the island of Ireland, quite literally a “lap of the map”. Running in aid of the brave men and women of the RNLI who risk their lives to save people at sea.

I will spend months on the road in the harshest of weathers, travelling a distance of nearly 5000 kilometres.
